Land Rover, Series 1
About this object
This Land Rover Series 1 was purchased brand new from Beck Motors in Invercargill by the Gardener family of Clifden in Western Southland. The Gardener's property was very steep and the Land Rover was the only vehicle capable of getting around the farm at that time. Richard Gardener used this Land Rover right up until he retired in 2008.
The Land Rover Series 1 are important in New Zealand's agricultural history as they were some of the first four wheel drive (4x4) vehicles used on farms in the country. They were easily maintained and didn't rust because of their aluminium body. They were ideal for the job of tackling New Zealand farm country. Prior to the introduction of quad bikes in the 1980s, Land Rovers were the quintessential New Zealand farm vehicle where you loaded in everything you needed for the day, including the dogs. For these reasons, the Land Rover Series 1 became a New Zealand icon.
