Jar of Ginger Preserve

About this object

This jar is part of a collection of items donated to the museum in 2002 by Mrs Helene Nicholson.

James Keiller & Son was originally started by Janet Keiller as a small confectionary business in Dundee around 1760. James, her son, took over the business from 1797 and he gave it his name and became James Keiller and Son in 1827.

The business continued to grow and became the largest confectionary manufacturer in the UK by 1869, however, by the 1880's they had to give up that title to Cadbury and Rowntree.
