Introduced in 1948, the Columbus Portable Radio was made by one of New Zealand's leading radio manufacturers, the Radio Corporation of New Zealand which was based in Wellington. As is still the case today, portable radios were popular in the 1940s but much of the time they lay idle and were expensive to run.
