About this object

Table with a chess board set in the top. The table top appears to be made of a pressed card painted black on both sides. It is oval in shape and decorated around the edges in gold (now faded) and a little red and blue in the larger motifs at each side. the chess board is decorated with paua shell chips in the "white" squares. The top is attached to a turned wooden pedestal, also black and decorated in a similar manner to the top. A hinge allows the top tip to the side. The base is circular and has three claw feet, two metal and one wood replacement.
