This book attempts to explain the distinctive character of Otago's past and the importance of its people to history. This book tells the history of whaling and the Otakou Whaling Station, the natural rock bridge on the Kawarau River, First Church and School, Taieri Bush and Saddle Hill, early settlement on the Taieri Plains and the Maclaggan Street Squatters Club, to name but a few.
