About this object

A framed black and white photograph of Captain John Phillip (Jack) Quilter in his World War Two Army uniform.

Jack Quilter died 4 May 1979, aged 68, and was buried in the Mataura Cemetery. According to archival records held by the Mataura & Districts Historical Society, before the war he served in the Territorial Force. During the war he served in North Africa with distinction until he was captured in the Western Desert, consequently spending the rest of the war in Italy and Germany as a prisoner-of-war. Once home he became an active member of the Mataura R.S.A, receiving a Gold Star for his contribution to the club.
