About this object

A black and white photograph of a gathering of the Southland Pioneer Settlers' Association taken on 27 March 1895. The occasion was a train excursion to Mataura for a tour of the Paper Mill, Freezing Works and Gardiner's Foundry. The Association was hosted by Mr and Mrs Cameron and the group is standing in front of the Cameron's Stone Hall in Main Street, Mataura.

According to the book 'Mataura: City of the Falls', the Stone Hall (also known as the Sale Rooms) was built by the Cameron's in 1883 with stones from a quarry located near the Mataura Falls and timber from the Tuturau Bush. This stone building was next to the Cameron's Hotel.

The Otago Daily Times recorded the excursion and the names of all the attendees.
