Photograph [Joe Wilson, Carrier, Mataura]

About this object

Undated black and white photograph of Josiah (Joe) Wilson, a Mataura based carrier on his horse drawn cart. Joe worked at the Mataura Paper Mill until 1919 when he bought out Sharp's carrying business. Wilson's horse drawn delivery and contracting services continued until the mid 1950s.

When Joe Wilson retired, the business people of Mataura presented him with an arm chair which he proudly put on his cart and tested out on the ride home. Two sons, Stan (Mick) and Len also worked in the business. Stan's speciality was delivering goods from the rail to local firms with a horse and cart. Len handled heavier loads with a two horse wagon and issued loud simple orders to his horses usually accompanied by a lurid description of the what would befall them if they failed to pull their weight. Unless they were addressed in this way the horses refused to budge. If any one complained about his foul language, Len would reasonably point out it was the only language that the horses understood.
