Undated black and white photograph of a Mataura based bakers van. The signage reads 'Digger, Bakery, Mataura'. Moncrief Shepherd and William Skeen Jolly established this business in 1922. Their start up advertisement in the Mataura Ensign dated 26 April that year reads:
'DIGGER BAKERY, MATAURA
We wish to inform the Public of Mataura and surrounding Districts that we have started business as Bakers and Pastry cooks etc in a shop next door to Miss Sutherland's Tea Rooms and hope by keeping the best of Bread, Cakes, Pastry etc and by strict attention to business and the requirements of the Public to merit a share of their patronage.
