About this object

A black and white photograph depicting the loading bank, situated along the Main Road of Mataura, for C.P. Sleeman's coal/lignite pit operation. Along the top of the bank can be seen a horse hitched to a series of wagons loaded with coal sitting on a railway track. Below the bank horses hitched to drays are waiting while their wagons are loaded from the wagons above. Employees seen include both men and boys working on this task.

In the background (left) can be seen a house, where a woman is standing on the front porch watching the proceedings. In the foreground (central left) can be seen several tussock plants growing on the stony ground.
