About this objectA photograph depicting workmen at an open face coal/lignite pit owned by Messrs C.P. Sleeman and Co. The men are using pick axes to chip away at the face of the rock. In front of the men is a horse-drawn dray waiting to be loaded with extracted lumps of coal/lignite. The pit was situated at the south end of Mataura, close to the Waimumu Stream.

Inscription and Marks
Photograph has bottom right-hand corner missing. Top left-hand corner and left-hand edge is discoloured, and there is a light smattering of brown spots across it.
The mounting has wear and tear in places, and edges have become scruffy.
