About this object
A black and white photograph taken in 1889 with the Mataura Paper Mill in the foreground, across on the west bank of the Mataura River is the Mataura Flour Mill. The Mataura River and Mataura Falls are in the centre of the image. The background shows, as yet undeveloped land.
The Mataura Flour Mill was created on the west bank of the Mataura River, opposite the Mataura Paper Mill after public concerns over the Mill company's attempts to monopolise the area on both sides of the Mataura Falls. The Mataura Flour Mill was demolished in 1892 to make way for the Mataura Freezing Works. Further information can be found in the Society's book 'Mataura: City of the Falls' pages 168-9.
