Photograph [Mataura Paper Mill, Mataura Falls, Mataura Freezing Works taken from an aerial view]
About this object
Photograph; a black and white aerial view prominently featuring the Mataura Paper Mill and the Mataura Falls, with the Mataura Freezing Works, Mataura River and peripheral township also in view.
The photograph also depicts a stretch of Kana Street running past the Mataura Paper Mill. This is an interesting shot which highlights the expansiveness of the Mataura Paper Mill one does not get to see from the ground, and how the Mill and the Mataura Freezing Works have developed alongside the Mataura Falls from a northern aspect instead of a more often seen southern aspect.
The aerial photograph was taken by an Auckland-based company, Whites Aviation Limited, established in 1945 by Leo White (1906-1967). The company produced thousands of aerial photographs taken across New Zealand (and beyond), and these photographs have become a valuable tool for researchers, historians and others.
