Undated black and white Postcard, showing the Mataura Paper Mill and Mataura River.
This photograph was taken by Charles Palmer Sleeman. Originally from England, he arrived in Mataura in 1882, aged 26. He first farmed at Te Tipua before buying land at the south end of Mataura, where he and his wife Hannah raised a family of eight sons and six daughters. He owned a number of coal/lignite pits in Mataura near the Waimumu stream. He was prominent in town affairs, and helped establish the Mataura Anglican Church and Brass Band. He was also an amateur photographer and a Mataura Borough councillor.
