Money box [Post Office Savings Bank]About this object
Money box: Post Office Savings Bank. Jean Neilson purchased this money box at the Mataura Post Office for one of her sons. The 'POSB' was a division of the New Zealand Post Office from 1867 until 1987, when it became PostBank.
This savings bank was made to look like a small book. It has two slots for inserting money - a circular hole for rolled notes, and a slot protected by plastic teeth to prevent coins from being removed. It could only be opened by a key at the Bank (or pried open if desperate).
