Photograph [John Henry Russell and Martha Russell]

About this object

A scan of a black and white photograph of John Henry Russell and Martha Russell. John and Martha immigrated from Manchester, England in 1925 so that John could take up a job (as a paper colourer) at the Mataura Paper Mill in 1925. Their son Billy was 5 years old when the family moved to New Zealand. The Russell family's story captures some keys themes for us: families shifting to work in Mataura's industry, what it was like to grow up and live in Mataura and the tragedy of war.

Here's a link to Billy's remarkable life story.
