A scan of a black and white photograph of William Henry (Billy) Russell with his parents John Henry Russell and Martha Russell outside their home in Argyle Street, Mataura.
John Russell immigrated from Manchester, England with his family to take up a job (as a paper colourer) at the Mataura Paper Mill in 1925. His son Billy was 5 years old when the family moved to New Zealand. Billy's story
captures some keys themes for us: families shifting to work in Mataura's industry, what it was like to grow up in Mataura and the tragedy of war.
