About this object

Duchess set in cream linen comprising a larger oval piece and two smaller round pieces. All have ecru edging and the same pattern fuschia flowers. It was made by Miss Bessie McGowan. Bessie was one of 6 daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel McGowan of Gowan Brae, Mataura. Because of ill health, needlework was her life's interest, and she was encouraged by her family to enter her work in many different shows. In 1926 she won the silver cup for the most talented needleworker at the Dunedin Exhibition. Bessie died in 1927, aged 46.
