About this object
A black and white postcard of Mr Archibald Nairn MacGibbon and Mrs May MacGibbon's house (Bowmore) on Argyle Street, Mataura. On the back of the postcard is a note from Mrs May MacGibbon to Doctor James Waugh Hay. Doctor J. W. Hay was a friend of the MacGibbon's and practised in Mataura from c.1908 to c.1910 before returning to England.
This house was flooded by the Mataura River in 1913 and we think this post card was intended to show the house after the flood, with the x on the verandah post showing the maximum height of the flood. Refer to MT2013.14.1 for a detailed account of the flood by Archibald Nairn MacGibbon including the evacuation of this house.
