Name/Title

Postcard, World War One

About this object

Post card; dated 13 November 1917 from trooper Hugh Brown to his nine year old nephew, Hugh Brown McConnell of Mataura. The card conveys a real sense of weariness but Hugh Brown was one of the lucky ones who survived the war.
Hugh has signed the card as 'Bear'. According to Val McConnell, he acquired this nickname because 'he often got grumpy after a few drinks!'

Hugh resumed his teaching career at Tuturau after returning home and was also a member of the Southland rugby squad who were the first South Island side to win the Ranfurly Shield after Wellington took the Shield on tour.
