About this object

Gavel; Mataura Borough Council Gavel. The engraved inscription tells its story:

'Made out of an old beech tree which grew on the site of the Glasgow Exhibition of 1888 and presented to the Mataura Borough Council by Thomas MacGibbon, Mayor, 1900. To whom it was a gift from the Town Clerk of Glasgow. The counterpart is now used by the Lord Provost of Glasgow.'

Thomas MacGibbon was Mayor from 1898 to 1904. The gavel was presented to us by on 5 October 1995 by Ian Tulloch, the then Mayor of the Gore District Council.
