About this object

A cast iron Hopkinson & Cope printing press gifted to Wiremu Toetoe Tumohe & Hemera Te Rerehau Paraone of Rangiaowhia by the Emperor of Austria following their visit to Austria in 1859. It was later used by the Kingitanga Movement to print the first Maori language newspaper Te Hokioi e Rere Atu Na.

Medium and Materials

The press is cast iron, not currently in working order. The press was made by Hopkinson & Cope between 1848 and 1858.

Subject and Association Description

The press was used to print a Maori Language newspaper to disseminate the Kingitanga’s views throughout the Upper North Island.
