Photograph, 1932 Otautau Fire Damage
About this object
This is a photograph of some of the damage of a massively destructive Otautau fire in 1932 - where many of the businesses on the west side of Main Street were burnt out and destroyed.
A tea-room, jewellery store, and hairdresser were amongst the business casualties; and many of the same buildings caught fire again just three years later. Sadly, the oldest and earliest of Otautau's buildings were situated on the west side of Main Street, meaning that the fire burnt down all of the original structures.
