Photograph, Otautau Women's Hockey TeamAbout this object
This is a photograph of the first Otautau Ladies Hockey team which formed on Friday June 9, 1911.
Players supplied their own sticks and their first practice had roughly 20 women in attendance. Vernon Smith volunteered as the women's coach and he quickly had the novices at top skill level. By September, the team were dominating the Western Southland and Invercargill hockey competitions.
The practices and games provided an excellent social outlet for local Otautau women, who on occasion stayed late playing games and cards while sharing cake and sandwiches. Additional to this, the women were essential to the fundraising for repairs to the local recreation centre, hosting events and volunteering to help at others. The team were very popular in the community and in turn so were the events they hosted.
Who is in the Photograph?
We have only managed to identified three people in the photograph. Ruby Lindsay (married name Milne) is in the back row second from the right and stood next to her is coach Vernon Smith. Belle Seatter is sitting in the middle row on the left.
Others who played for the Otautau Ladies Hockey team in 1911 are; Forwards: Misses Garmson (relieving teacher at Otautau School, shifted to Invercargill to teacher in Sept 1911), Taylor Brown, Miss Gibson, Miss Ford; Halfbacks: Belle (Isabelle) Seatter, Jean Gray (Capt), Milly Alleck (Dept); Fullbacks: Miss Swap and Margaret Seatter; Goalkeeper: Miss Prendeville.
If you are descendant of any of these women or can identify someone in the photograph, we would love to hear from you. You can contact us via our Facebook page @projectarksouthland
