About this object

This black and white photograph of Otautau Post Office was taken in 1909 just three years after it was officially opened. A grand brick built two story renaissance style building, typical of public buildings of the time, it incorporated not only a mail and telegraph room, the postmasters office and a public telephone bureau but also the postmasters residence.

The postmaster Mr. A.V.King, standing on the right, is seen next to his assistant Mr. A.W. Swap, Duddie Ford the postman and the telegraph message boy.
