Historical Notes on the Birchwood Hunt:
Under Captain Gardiner, who from 1886 commanded the Run 143, north of Otautau, this estate became famous for the Birchwood Hounds or Hunt and the associated house parties and other activities on the property. In time, the Birchwood Estate gained a rich reputation for "the hunt" and parties. These hunts were also held at many other historical runs and stations across Southland and still exist today. Captain James Gardiner died in 1907.
After the glory days in the late 1800's and early 1900's, with the advent of more motorized transport, "the hunt" as it was affectionately called, started to lose followers and funds. By the time 1999 came around, the hunt had lost its funding from the associated racing and was in dire difficulty. However, in the usual enterprising spirit of those who call Southland home, the situation was turned around and not only did the club manage to met its debts, they could also purchase a property at Jubilee Hill Road on the Longwood's side of Otautau, which they leased to create funds to continue.
