About this object
The Reserve Bank commenced operations on 1st August 1934.
This was the very first cheque issued on its first day.
This cheque transferred the Crown’s public disbursement account from the North End Branch of the Bank of New Zealand to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. The signatories on the cheque are G.C. Rodda (Paymaster-General) and Bertram “Bertie” Mackay (BNZ North End Branch Accountant).
The Reserve Bank was the Government’s banker from 1934 until 1989, when Westpac took over this role.
