About this object

This egg is cream-coloured with light brown flecks and belongs to a North Island brown kiwi. Kiwis lay eggs that are about 20 percent of the mother’s body weight – the largest in proportion to their body size for any bird.

Kiwi chicks hatch fully-feathered and are able to leave their nest after a week. They continue to grow for up to two years. Chicks are particularly at risk from introduced predators in the first six months of their lives.
