Name/Title

Floor tiles ex SS TASMANIA, dining room

About this object

Three ceramic tiles originally laid on the floor of the dining room of SS TASMANIA.The pattern on the encaustic (inlaid) tiles was produced by using different colours of clay. The pattern is inlaid into the body of the tile so as the tile is worn down the pattern remains.
They were retrieved by John Dearling during a dive trip with Kelly Tarlton in the 1970s, from SS TASMANIA which was wrecked off Table Cape, Mahia Peninsula, 29 July 1897.
