Lapérouse cannon no.12

About this object

1 pound pierrier bronze cannon with the weight 1471/2 pounds and the number 12 marked on the trunnions. The cannon was found and retrieved from the reefs of Vanikoro, a small island in the Solomon Islands. It came from the wreck site of one of the ships that took part in the French voyages of discovery at the end of the 18th century. Jean-Francois left Australia in 1788 and was never seen again. His ships Boussole and Astrolabe were found 40 years later to have been wrecked in a cyclone.
