Book: A Land of Promise- Jacob and Benjamin Isaacs
Maker About this object"A Land of Promise: An Account of Jacob Isaacs, Jewish Convict and Benjamin Isaacs, Christian Printer and Publisher" by Kris Jacobsen. 2009, self published. Benjamin Isaacs, the author's great-great-great-grandfather, came to Kororareka twice: in 1842 he was employed as the printer of "The Bay of Islands Observer" until it closed in November 1842. In 1843 he returned, supported initially by Hugh McLennan, as printer and publisher of the Bay of Islands Advocate. It too was a financial failure and Isaacs returned to Parramatta in 1844. Pages 48 to 58 give a good history of these earliest newspaper ventures in Kororareka and include a copy of the front page of the only known surviving issue of the BOI Advocate 18 November 1843 in the Hocken collections.
