Cap, Southland Rugby

About this object

This Southland Rugby Football Union cap belonged to Geoff Haldane. Southland Rugby awarded Geoff this cap in recognition for his playing for three games for the regional team. Geoff only played for Southland in 1925 and retired after his third match.

Geoff played rugby for the Waikawa Rovers who were based at Niagara and was selected for the Southland Team in the 1920s. In doing so, he became the first person from the area to represent Southland. Being athletic and fast, Geoff played on the wing.

In an era when representative rugby was unpaid, Geoff worked on his family farm at Niagara near the Chaslands turn off. Our collection also includes a 1925 Southland team photograph showing Geoff.
