Photograph, Niagara Women's Hockey Team

About this object

This is a photograph of the 1928 Niagara Women's Hockey Team.

Prior to the First World War Hockey was the leading sport for women in New Zealand. By the 1930s, netball had largely taken over this position in most of the country, however, women's hockey in Southland has remained strong. The Eastern Southland Women's Hockey team won the K Cup (national women's title) five times in a row in the 1930s, an accomplishment reflecting the strength of the sport in Southland at the time.
