About this object

All calls to the then New Plymouth Borough Council were answered by one operator at the manual telephone switchboard. Similar in design to the earlier manual exchanges each call was answered via one of the extending cords and the transferred to the required person via the other part of the extending cord. An indiction light above each socket advised the operator of incoming calls and when the call had ended.
