About this object
Fourteen-year-old Clara Emily Clendon received this cooking book in 1880. It is filled with old-fashioned recipes and accompanying decorative illustrations for meals such as mayonnaise of mutton, roast goose, giblet pie, jugged hare, gooseberry fool, Welsh rabbit and mock crab. It also includes health and home recipes for quinine wine, plate powder, and lavender water perfume. At the head and foot of every page, there are little moral phrases, such as ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’, ‘moderation is a great safeguard’, ‘despise school and remain a fool’, and ‘hunger is the best sauce.’
Before the mid-20th century, it was generally accepted that a woman’s social role was centred upon marriage, motherhood, and taking care of husband, home and children. Housekeeping, especially cooking, was a significant part of the life of a nineteenth-century woman. This book provides an insight into the types of foods that were available and utilised during the Victorian era.
Clara was born on 14 April 1866 and was the daughter of Captain James Reddy and Jane Takotowi Clendon (nee Cochrane). She grew up at Clendon House, located in Rawene (previously known as Herd’s Point) in the Hokianga region. On 19 February 1885, Clara married Andrew Webster at Herd’s Point Church in Hokianga. They had three children: Frederick, James Reddy and Edith May.
