Certificate [Frances Louisa Clendon]About this object
The Hokianga Horticultural Society presented this certificate to Frances Louisa Clendon for receiving first prize in the Plants in Pots competition with her potted cactus. This horticultural exhibition took place on 27 December 1886 in the County Hall. According to the New Zealand Herald:
‘The exhibits were good, and fairly numerous; in fact, much better than was expected, considering the time of year. … The hall was tastefully decorated with large tree ferns (ponga), and nikau, in their natural forms, and standing about 10 feet high, and under their gracefully drooping fronds were nicely arranged the various collections of foliage plants, flowers and fruit. … The attendance was very good, the hall being completely thronged till dispersing time, six p.m. We may safely state that the society’s show was a complete success.’ (1)
Horticultural and agricultural societies were first established in New Zealand as early as the 1840s and their annual shows and competitions became increasingly popular events within communities. (2)
Frances was born on 26 July 1869 and was the daughter of Captain James Reddy and Jane Takotowi Clendon (nee Cochrane). She grew up at Clendon House, located in Rawene (previously known as Herd’s Point) in the Hokianga region. On 9 June 1892, Frances married Robert Patrick Flood and they had six children: Thomas Frederick, George Robert, George Patrick, Katherine Mary, Jane Margaret, Mary Frances.
