AuthorAbout this object
The full tittle of this book is: ‘My Friends and Acquaintances: Being Memorials, Mind-Portraits, and Personal Recollections of Deceased Celebrities of the Nineteenth Century: Volume One’. It originally belonged to James Reddy Clendon, and then his wife Jane Takotowi Clendon (nee Cochrane). These volumes were filled with gossip and personal information about well-known people of the time.
Jane was born in 1838 and was the daughter of Dennis Browne Cochrane and his wife Takotowi Te Whata. She married Captain James Reddy Clendon on 9 January 1856 in Rahu-Rahu in the Hokianga region when she was only 18 years old (she was 40 years younger than her husband). In October 1872, Jane’s husband died, leaving her with eight young children, the eldest not quite 16 years and the youngest only 17 months old. She also inherited a crippling load of debt from her husband. Before the 20th century, there was no government support for families in financial difficulties, so Jane was forced to pay her debts and provide for her eight children by undertaking small deeds such as selling firewood, bark, and home produce. By 1881 Jane had paid her debt, managing to save her house and educate her children.
