Booklet, 'Financial Position of the Colony. Speech of the Honourable Major Atkinson'About this object
Booklet; entitled 'Financial Position of the Colony. Speech of the Honourable Major Atkinson'. Sir Harry Atkinson presented this speech in the House of Representatives on 30 June 1880.
Harry Atkinson was Colonial Treasurer for 10 years between 1875 and 1882, through most of the worst years of the Long Depression of the 1880s and 1890s. Known for his financial conservatism in terms of borrowing money for development, and preaching the need for moderation in expenditure, his opinions and policies were not always received with praise.
