Photograph; a black and white or sepia toned photographic portrait, depicting Sir Harry Atkinson. The subject is depicted in a frontal head and shoulders shot, with his head turned towards the proper right. The photograph is glazed and mounted, and enclosed in a wooden frame.
Harry Atkinson was the builder and first inhabitant of Hurworth Cottage. A prominent political figure, he held a number of local and national government positions over the years. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1861 and went on to become Premier of New Zealand, an office he held four times between 1876 and 1891. He received the KCMG (Knight Commander of St Michael and St George) in 1888.
