Preserving jar and contents

About this object

Preserving jar and contents; a large clear glass preserving jar moulded with 'Dominion / SPECIAL', and with a metal screw thread lid. The jar was made in Canada. It contains peaches most likely preserved by Muriel Kerr Taylor in the 1970s.

The orchard at Alberton included ginger lilies, a guava hedge, quinces, apples, pears, peaches and array of other fruit which Muriel Kerr Taylor, the last remaining family member to live in the house, was still preserving in the 1970s. When all three of 'the aunts', Mildred, Winifred, and Muriel, were living at Alberton each had their own area of the orchard, as well as their own section of an extensive vegetable garden.
