Painting, Untitled [Violet and Daisy Kerr Taylor]; Post 1885; XAH.Z.44
Painting, Untitled [Violet and Daisy Kerr Taylor]About this object
Painting; a portrait of Violet and Daisy Kerr Taylor as young girls. Each wears a dark dress with a white collar. The artist has copied a carte de visite which had deliberately merged two separate images of the individual children, after Daisy's death in 1885 [see XAH.GH.1.5]. Framed in a gilded frame with an oval matt. Written on the matt underneath each child is 'Violet' and 'Daisy'.
Thora Daisy Kerr Taylor died of 'brain fever' on 15 September 1885, aged nine. While the death of a child was not unusual during the Victorian era this does not mean that the loss was not felt greatly by parents and family members. The inclusion of Daisy in this portrait, even after her death, is evidence of this. The Kerr Taylors also had another daughter, Adeline Daisy, who died in 1874, aged 19 months. Both children by Allan Kerr Taylor's first wife Patty died in infancy.
