Toy [Horse and cart]About this object
Toy [Horse and cart]; a tin and wooden toy. The toy is comprised of two wooden horses which are pulling a rectangular red cart on hinged flat metal legs attached to the cart with wires. The horses have a colour paper lining and the wheels of the cart are painted silver. The wheels are metal, with the two back wheels being larger than the front. Purchased in 1912.
This small wooden horse and cart toy was given to Donald Kerr Taylor by his aunt Muriel in 1912, when he was four years old. Horses have always been an interest of the Kerr Taylor family who were amongst the founding members of the Pakuranga Hunt Club. Allan Kerr Taylor was also President of the Auckland Racing Club before his death in 1890. One of the descendants of the family began breeding and racing horses in 1987 under the title of ‘Sir Alberton’. It went on to win seven races and its progeny have also gone on to success. In 2008 'Lady Alberton' won the Auckland Racing Club’s Eclipse Stakes, the same race her mother, 'Alberton Star', had won in 2000. Another horse, 'Alberton Princess', is also racing under the colours of the Alberton silks.
