Book, 'The Natural History of the Feline'About this object
Book, 'The Natural History of the Feline'; by Sir William Jardine. Published in Edinburgh by W H Lizars, and Stirling and Kenney, in 1834. Bound in brown leather with an embossed gold emblem on the front cover. The book contains a number of coloured illustrations. Inside the front cover is a book plate written in Latin, presenting the book to Allan Kerr Taylor.
Found in a desk drawer once used by Allan Kerr Taylor, this book is one of the few items held in the collection relating to the time he spent in India and Scotland. It was likely given to him when he travelled from his birthplace in India to Scotland to further his education in 1840. Allan's father was a captain in the 39th Madras Native Infantry and spent most of his life in India. The fact that Allan brought the book with him when he came to New Zealand, as a 16-year-old, in 1848, suggests that it was a very treasured possession.
