Cabinet photograph [depicting Violet and Thora Daisy Kerr Taylor]

About this object

Cabinet photograph; showing Violet Kerr Taylor on the left and her sister Thora Daisy Kerr Taylor on the right. Both girls wear dark velvet dresses with white collars. This photograph was made after Daisy's death, from two separate photographs which have been merged together. The photograph is on a black backing, with the Bartlett studio markings.

Thora Daisy died of 'brain fever' on 15 September 1885, aged nine. While the death of a child was not unusual during the Victorian era this does not mean that the loss was not felt greatly by parents and family members. The inclusion of Daisy in this photograph, even after her death, is evidence of this. In another photograph album held at Alberton small drawings done by Daisy as a child are also kept as a poignant reminder of their tragic loss.
