By the 1870s and 1880s Alberton had become an increasing social centre for the town, hosting many events and parties (including the first county or riding ball in New Zealand in 1877). Until the district hall was built, St Luke’s annual social and fundraising concerts were often held in the Taylor’s barn 'tastefully decorated for the occasion with various flags and festoons of evergreens and flowers'.(1) These local concerts later included comedies as part of the proceedings and a number of acting editions of plays remain at Alberton. In addition to her theatrical talents, Sophia was also particularly musical and she would often perform a song at the concerts. She also sang in the church choir and played the piano.
