Horses were of great importance to Alberton and there were at least a dozen in 1885, used for riding, farm work and vehicles. Allan Kerr Taylor also had an interest in the Auckland Racing Club, holding the positions of steward, in 1885, Vice President, in 1886, and President, from 1887 until his death in 1890. However, while he and his family regularly attended race meetings, he did not own any racehorses.
