Book, 'May's Guide to Farming in New Zealand'About this object
Book; entitled 'May's Guide to Farming in New Zealand', by Joseph May, published in Auckland by George T Chapman and printed by W Atkins. This book has a green hard cover with white printed label on the front. 'A K Taylor / Alberton / 1869' is written in ink on the front page.
Allan Kerr Taylor began life as a farmer and Alberton was originally a farm house, located on the over 500 acres of land Taylor had purchased at Mt Albert. However he quickly became involved in provincial politics and the family's income soon shifted from farming to land sales and company investments. The house's conversion to a fashionable mansion probably occurred sometime in the 1870s. Alberton remained a self-sufficient country estate, or at least retained aspects of this, up until 1972 when it was bequeathed to the Historic Places Trust.
