Letter [Charles Taylor to Mrs Taylor]
About this object
Letter, from Charles Taylor to Mrs Taylor; handwritten in black ink and relating to Allan Kerr Taylor's will and estate. Dated 20 August 1890 and written from Surrey.
Allan Kerr Taylor died suddenly in April 1890 leaving his wife Sophia in charge of his large estate. In this letter Allan's older brother Charles writes to Sophia lamenting the 'monstrous' succession duties attracted by the property. At the time Alberton was valued in excess of £20,000. Sophia made strenuous efforts to have it revalued in order to attract less tax.(1) Allan had died at an extremely inopportune time, when New Zealand was in the middle of a depression and his land and shares were worth little.
