Magazine, 'The Dawn of Day, Supplement to the Church Gazette. Vol. III, January 1880'

About this object

This magazine belonged to Mildred Kerr Taylor when she was thirteen years old. This ‘Dawn of Day’ was an illustrated monthly magazine for Sunday school and parish use.

The Kerr Taylor family were devout Anglicans and attended both morning and evening services at St. Luke’s church in Mount Albert, Auckland, every Sunday. All of the Kerr Taylor children attended Sunday school where their mother, Sophia, taught for 46 years. Mildred and her sister Winifred also taught Sunday school there when their mother retired in 1920. (1)

Books and magazines, like this one, were an important part of Victorian life in an era where there was no television, computers, or radio. Books and magazines were not only a vital source of entertainment, but were also didactic, teaching young children important lesson about Christian morality and correct behaviour.
