About this object
This illustrated paperback edition of the classic novel, ‘Little Women’ was given to Mildred Kerr Taylor by a Mrs Hawker.
‘Little Women’ was written by American author, Louisa May Alcott. It tells the story of four sisters Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March, and their journey from childhood to womanhood. The story is loosely based on the lives of the author and her three sisters. It is possible that Mildred saw similarities between the story and her own life as she too had three sisters and grew up during the same era.
Books, like this one, were an important part of Victorian life in a time where there was no television, computers, or radio. Books were not only a vital source of entertainment, but were also didactic, teaching young children important lessons in morality and correct behaviour.
